Reports recently surfaced suggesting that Ajit Agarkar had approached the board for an extension of his tenure as India’s chief selector. The speculation quickly caught attention, especially in the wake of India’s strong performances in recent international tournaments, prompting discussions about continuity in the selection committee.

BCCI sets record straight

Responding swiftly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has dismissed the claims as inaccurate. A senior BCCI official clarified that no such request has been made by Agarkar, and there have been no internal discussions regarding extending his tenure at this stage.

The board emphasised that such decisions follow a structured process and are not made prematurely.

Contract status and tenure

Ajit Agarkar, a former India all-rounder, took charge as chief selector in 2023 and has since played a key role in shaping the national team across formats. His current contract is set to run until September 2026, leaving ample time before any renewal considerations arise. The BCCI reiterated that any decision on his continuation will be made only closer to the contract’s conclusion.

With major bilateral series and ICC events lined up, the immediate priority for both Agarkar and the board remains team performance and strategic planning.

Stability in selection has been a highlight of his tenure, and the board is likely to assess his impact comprehensively before making any long-term decision.
