Google has confirmed that it will shut down Firebase Studio on March 22, 2027, less than a year after launching the platform in April 2025. The company shared the update with users, stating, "Firebase Studio is sunsetting on March 22, 2027", reported The Times of India.

Why Google is pulling the plug

Explaining the decision, Google said it is refining its AI development ecosystem. "We're simplifying our AI developer offerings by transitioning the lessons learned from the Firebase Studio preview into our flagship tools: Google AI Studio and Google Antigravity," the company said.

Firebase Studio was introduced as a preview to test AI-driven, full-stack development. Based on user feedback, Google is now focusing on clearer and more specialised tools. It added that core Firebase services such as Cloud Firestore, Authentication and App Hosting will continue to operate as usual, and the shutdown only affects the Firebase Studio development environment.

Timeline for shutdown

Google has outlined a phased transition to give developers time to move their work:

March 19, 2026: Announcement of the shutdown, with migration tools rolling out

June 22, 2026: New workspace creation will be disabled

March 22, 2027: Firebase Studio will be fully shut down, and all remaining data will be permanently deleted

Google is directing users towards two alternatives, depending on their workflow needs.

Move to Google Antigravity

Antigravity is positioned as a code-first, next-generation IDE built for local, agentic development. It is suited for developers who prefer working with direct control over their codebase, use Code View, or need advanced AI-assisted development features.

For those who rely on browser-based workflows, Google AI Studio will offer a web-first experience. The company noted that migration tools for this option are still in development and will be released soon. It is aimed at users focused on rapid prototyping and prompt-driven app creation.

What remains unchanged

Google reassured users that backend services will remain unaffected. Databases, authentication systems and hosted apps will continue to function normally outside Firebase Studio.

The company emphasised that the transition is aimed at creating "clearer, more powerful paths forward" while maintaining continuity for existing Firebase services.
