After 39 overs and nearly three hours of play, India sealed a convincing 92-run victory in the T20 World Cup final. Although the match went the full distance, the result was largely shaped during the powerplays. After winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first, but the Indian batters had other plans. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking, powering India to 96 runs in the powerplay. Such an explosive start in a World Cup final not only piles pressure on the opposition but also dents their confidence early in the game.
India’s bowlers then mirrored the dominance in the second innings. While New Zealand hoped to build momentum, the Indian attack quickly tightened its grip. The bowlers struck hard in the powerplay, removing key batters Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips. These early breakthroughs effectively halted New Zealand’s chase and firmly put India in control of the contest.

Powerplay: New Zealand innings
After a daunting target set by India of 256 runs, New Zealand needed a strong start in the powerplay to stay alive in the game. However, the scenes of the night of 8th March turned out to be completely different and definitely not in favour of New Zealand .India’s pace attack came out with clear intent, maintaining tight lines while extracting movement with the new ball. The breakthrough came early when dangerous opener Finn Allen was dismissed while attempting to take on the Indian bowlers inside the powerplay. The early wicket immediately slowed down New Zealand’s scoring momentum. The pressure continued to mount as the Indian bowlers left no scope for New Zealand batters to find gaps easily. A major setback took place when Rachin Ravindra got bowled out by Bumrah on his first delivery, silencing the maximum hope for New Zealand's win. India tightened the screws further when power-hitter Glenn Phillips also fell during the powerplay, effectively denting New Zealand’s hopes of building a strong chase. By the end of Powerplay, New Zealand had lost it's maximum important wickets and failed to keep up with the required run rate.
