With the excitement of the recent T20 World Cup still fresh, the focus of international cricket is gradually shifting toward the next major global event: the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. For India, the tournament will be another important milestone as the team looks to continue its strong run in global competitions.

The upcoming 50-over World Cup is also expected to bring two of India’s most celebrated cricketers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, back into the centre of attention. Having reduced their involvement in certain formats, the senior duo is likely to play a crucial role in India’s preparations for the tournament. Their experience, leadership and consistency in ODI cricket could prove vital as the team begins planning for another World Cup campaign.

As India prepares for the long road ahead, the management will aim to build a balanced squad that combines seasoned campaigners with emerging talent.

ODI World Cup returns to Africa with expanded tournament format

The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, marking the return of the tournament to the African continent. The event is scheduled to take place in October and November 2027.

Unlike recent editions, the upcoming World Cup will feature 14 teams, expanding the competition and allowing more nations to compete on the biggest stage. The tournament format will also include a Super Six stage, in which the top teams from the group phase advance before the knockout rounds begin.

The expanded format is expected to intensify competition, with several emerging teams looking to challenge traditional cricketing powers.

India begins early preparations for the global event

India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup are expected to begin well in advance. Bilateral ODI series and international tours over the next two years will help the team finalise combinations and strengthen its squad.

A potential ODI series against Afghanistan in mid-2026 could mark an important step in the build-up, possibly featuring the return of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the format.
