Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has once again weighed in on Abhishek Sharma’s batting approach, clarifying his earlier ‘slugger’ remark while offering technical advice to the young Indian opener during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Amir clarifies ‘slugger’ remark
Speaking on a Pakistani television show, Amir said his earlier comments were made strictly from a bowler’s perspective and were not intended as disrespect. The former left-arm pacer had previously described Abhishek as a “slugger,” suggesting that the batter relies heavily on deliveries in specific hitting zones to score big.

Amir explained that high-quality international attacks can exploit technical limitations if a batter becomes predictable. Referring to Abhishek’s recent 15-run knock off 12 balls, he observed that most of the runs came in one direction and largely off loose deliveries. He added that once bowlers like Kagiso Rabada settled into disciplined line and length, Abhishek appeared uncomfortable at the crease.
Advice to regain form
Despite the criticism, Amir acknowledged Abhishek’s fearless mindset, particularly his willingness to maintain an aggressive approach even after registering low scores earlier in the tournament.
Offering constructive advice, Amir said that international cricket consistently exposes technical gaps and emphasized the need for patience. He suggested that Abhishek should focus on reading the ball early and choosing the right deliveries to attack, rather than committing to premeditated big shots.

“He has the ability to become a good cricketer,” Amir said, adding that better shot selection and composure would help the Indian opener convert starts into impactful innings on the global stage.
