US President Donald Trump was reportedly seen with swollen ankles during a podcast appearance. Trump's ankles have shifted the focus to the medical condition known as Edema. Podcaster Josh Pate shared a photo of himself with the President on X, showing Donald Trump's ankles protruding over his shoes.
While the White House has time and again attributed the swelling of the President's ankles to chronic venous insufficiency, this condition is generally known as Edema, in which fluid accumulates in the tissues.
What is Edema?
Edema might look harmless from the outset. But it can be a sign of underlying health issues. The issues might range from vascular and cardiac conditions to kidney and liver ailments, NDTV reported.
Swollen ankles happen when extra fluid builds up in body tissues. It often affects the feet and lower legs because gravity pulls fluid downward, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

What are the causes behind Edema?
One major cause is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). This happens when the vein valves in the legs weaken. Blood does not flow back to the heart properly. It pools in the legs. Fluid then leaks into nearby tissues. This leads to visible swelling and sometimes varicose veins. CVI is common in people over 65.
Swelling can also point to heart, kidney, or liver disease.
In congestive heart failure, the heart cannot pump blood well. Blood backs up in veins. In kidney disease, the body retains salt and water. This increases fluid in the blood and causes swelling.
In liver disease, low albumin levels reduce the blood's ability to hold fluid. Fluid then escapes into tissues.

What are the warning signs?
Not all ankle swelling is due to Edema. Long hours of standing or sitting can slow blood return. High salt intake increases water retention. Some medicines, such as calcium channel blockers and corticosteroids, may also cause Edema.
However, some signs need urgent care.
Sudden swelling in one leg with pain may mean Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot. Shortness of breath or chest pain with swelling may signal pulmonary Edema. These are medical emergencies, NDTV said.
Persistent or worsening swelling, especially in older adults, should not be ignored. Mild cases can be managed with simple steps. Raise the legs above heart level. Wear compression stockings. Walk regularly. Reduce salt intake.
