Consistency in the shortest format of the game is often harder than brilliance. In a tournament as intense and unpredictable as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, even the best batters struggle to string together big scores across matches. That is why Sanju Samson’s latest run with the bat has drawn attention. With three consecutive half-centuries in the tournament, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter has joined an exclusive club of players who have managed this rare feat on cricket’s biggest T20 stage.

A rare record shared by cricket’s elite

Scoring fifty runs in a T20 match is often the difference between victory and defeat. Doing it three times in a row in a high-pressure global tournament is even rarer. Before Samson’s achievement, only a handful of players had managed to record three consecutive 50-plus scores in T20 World Cup history.

Among them is Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene, who achieved the feat during the 2010 edition of the tournament with a series of composed and technically sound innings. Years later, India’s modern batting icon Virat Kohli matched the record across multiple editions between 2016 and 2021, underlining his remarkable consistency on the global stage.

The list also features Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who produced three consecutive half-centuries during the 2021 tournament, as well as India’s KL Rahul, who achieved the same milestone during that edition.

In the ongoing tournament, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis and Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan have also joined the list alongside Samson, highlighting the competitive nature of modern T20 batting.

Samson’s consistency stands out

For Samson, the milestone is particularly significant because it reflects not just a single standout innings but a sustained run of form. Known for his elegant strokeplay and fearless approach, the Kerala batter has often been praised for his natural talent. However, critics have sometimes questioned his ability to maintain consistency at the international level.

This sequence of three consecutive half-centuries answers many of those doubts. Samson’s performances have combined attacking intent with measured shot selection, allowing him to anchor innings while still maintaining a strong strike rate. Beyond the numbers, his contributions have also provided stability to the Indian batting lineup, especially during crucial phases of matches where quick runs and composure are equally important.

Records in T20 cricket can often feel fleeting, but milestones like three consecutive 50-plus scores in a World Cup underline the value of sustained excellence. By joining an elite list that includes players like Kohli and Jayawardene, Sanju Samson has etched his name into the tournament’s statistical history. More importantly, his run of form could prove vital for India as the competition moves toward its decisive stages.
