The Indiana Fever will head into their preseason opener with a depleted squad, as four players have been ruled out ahead of their clash with the New York Liberty. While the absence may raise concerns at first glance, the situation appears more precautionary than alarming.
Injury management, not major setbacks
According to the Indy Star, three players, Aliyah Boston, Tyasha Harris and Lexie Hull, are sidelined due to minor injury concerns. Boston is recovering from a lower leg issue, Harris is managing a knee problem, and Hull is dealing with hamstring tightness.
All three are currently on controlled return-to-play programmes. Team sources suggest they would likely be available if this were a regular-season fixture, indicating that the coaching staff is simply exercising caution during the preseason. In addition to the injury list, Damiris Dantas will miss the game due to ongoing visa complications. Her absence is unrelated to fitness and depends on administrative clearance rather than medical recovery.

Opportunity for young players
Head coach Stephanie White has hinted that these absences could actually benefit the team in the long run. With several regulars unavailable, newer and younger players are expected to get more minutes and a chance to prove themselves. This approach is common in preseason, where the focus often shifts from results to squad evaluation and player development.

No cause for long-term concern
Despite missing four players, there is little indication of serious long-term issues for the Fever. Boston, in particular, has already expressed confidence in her recovery after withdrawing from international duty earlier this year. For now, the team appears to be prioritising fitness and depth-building over short-term results, a strategy that could pay off once the regular season begins.
