OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.5, describing it as its "smartest and most intuitive to use model" so far. The release marks another step in the company's rapid model rollout cycle and signals progress toward its long-term ambition of building a unified AI "super app".
A step towards agentic computing
Per TechCrunch, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said the new model represents a meaningful shift in how users interact with AI systems.
"This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future; but it is one step, and we expect to see many in the future," TechCrunch quoted Brockman as saying.

"It's a faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens compared to something like 5.4. So this means that there’s just more frontier AI available for businesses and for consumers, which is part of our goal."
He added that GPT-5.5 moves the company closer to its vision of a multi-functional "super app", combining tools like ChatGPT, Codex and an AI browser into a single platform.
'Super app' race heats up
The concept of a super app has been discussed by OpenAI leadership, including co-founder Sam Altman. It also mirrors ambitions from rivals such as Elon Musk, who has spoken about transforming X into a similar all-in-one platform.
GPT-5.5 arrives shortly after the company's previous updates, reflecting a steady pace of development. OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki highlighted expectations for continued rapid progress.
"We see pretty significant improvements in the short term, extremely significant improvements in the medium term," Pachocki said. "In fact, I would say, like, I think the last two years have been surprisingly slow."
Performance and enterprise use
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 improves performance across benchmarks when compared to earlier models and competitors like Google and Anthropic. The model is designed for a wide range of applications, including coding, knowledge work, mathematics and scientific research.
OpenAI's chief research officer Mark Chen said the system also shows progress in technical workflows. "Shows meaningful gains on scientific and technical research workflows," he noted, adding it could "help expert scientists make progress".

Availability and rollout
GPT-5.5 is now being rolled out across ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users. A more advanced version, 5.5 Pro, will be available to select paid tiers, as OpenAI continues expanding its AI ecosystem.
