Elon Musk has widened his lead at the top of the global rich list, with a reported net worth of $832.1 billion, a value greater than the combined net worth of the world’s 693 least wealthy billionaires, according to a report by Forbes.

The report noted that the combined net worth of the 693 billionaires was between $1 billion and $1.4 billion, thus underlining Elon Musk’s financial supremacy.

The billionaire entrepreneur’s financial value was also noted to have exceeded the combined net worth of prominent billionaires including Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, and Warren Buffett by an estimated $54 billion.

A widening gap at the top

Musk is now more than three times richer than the world’s second-richest individual, Larry Page, whose net worth is estimated at around $257 billion.

The increase in Musk's wealth can be attributed to the increase in the valuation of the companies he is associated with, including Tesla, SpaceX, and the artificial intelligence company xAI. Within the last year, Musk has hit various financial milestones, becoming the first to break the $500 billion, $600 billion, $700 billion, and now the $800 billion mark.

Race to a trillion-dollar fortune

According to Forbes, Musk may be on course to becoming the first trillionaire on the planet if Tesla meets the performance targets of the compensation deal.

The unprecedented scale of his wealth has reignited debate over income inequality and wealth concentration, with Musk’s fortune alone now rivaling the economic output of smaller nations.

Personal philosophy on wealth

Musk, despite his record-breaking wealth, seems to harbor some scepticism about the traditional practices surrounding inheritance. In a 2023 statement, as reported by Forbes, Musk said, he does not support automatically passing wealth or company control to his children unless they demonstrate the ability and interest to manage it.

“I think that’s a mistake,” he said, suggesting a merit-based system for leading companies.
