The festive spirit of the Chaitra sale season may face a dampener as the Alipore Meteorological Department signals a fresh spell of nor’westers across West Bengal. Bringing relief from the ongoing scorching heat and sticky humidity, thunderstorms and rain are set to intensify across several districts of South Bengal from Friday.
Weather officials have indicated that storm activity will pick up pace, raising concerns about its possible impact on peak shopping days during the Chaitra sale period.
Humid discomfort continues despite cloud cover
Kolkata woke up to partly cloudy skies on Wednesday, but the cloud cover has done little to ease the humidity. Residents are likely to continue experiencing discomfort due to the lingering humid conditions.

The minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 24.2C, which is 0.6C above normal, while the maximum temperature settled at 30.6C, around 3.6C below the seasonal average.
However, there is some relief in sight. The likelihood of thunderstorms is expected to increase significantly from Friday, with Saturday likely to witness the heaviest rainfall. Citizens are advised to carry umbrellas and stay prepared for sudden weather changes over the weekend.
South Bengal: Rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms expected
Several districts in South Bengal are set to experience rain from Friday onwards. Areas including Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, and both East and West Bardhaman districts may witness intense weather activity.
The forecast suggests the possibility of hailstorms accompanied by strong gusty winds in these regions. Other districts in South Bengal are also likely to experience thunderstorms, signalling a widespread weather shift across the region.

Heavy rainfall alert in multiple districts of North Bengal
North Bengal will continue to remain under the influence of weather conditions. Districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri are expected to witness repeated spells of thunderstorms.
Rainfall activity is likely to intensify further on Friday and Saturday. According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is highly probable in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
In the hilly regions, strong winds along with possible hailstorms may add to the weather impact, prompting caution among residents and travellers.
