Burner phones can be defined as phones built with the sole intention of temporary use. If you assume that phones only include smart and feature phones, then your knowledge about phones is quite limited.

There is one category of phones that is very unique, and it includes the "burner phone". These phones are very commonly referred to in the movies and TV series, as they are used in secret talks.

A phone dedicated to protecting your privacy

In essence, a burner phone can be defined as a phone created for temporary use. The most important function of such a device is ensuring anonymity and protecting the privacy of communication. In comparison to regular phones, this one has fewer functions; nevertheless, it is believed that it is much safer from the point of view of providing confidentiality. Once its job is done, it can be either disposed of or simply destroyed so that there would be no traces left afterwards.

Why is it so hard to trace?

One of the most important traits of a burner phone is that it cannot be traced. Firstly, such a phone is made to be used immediately, without having to go through the process of registration and identification. Secondly, the price of a burner phone is relatively low due to its minimal technological content.

In essence, it operates similarly to how a typical feature phone does, as it provides nothing more than essential capabilities such as making calls and sending messages. In some cases, internet capabilities might be available on the device; however, its main use is restricted to communication only.

How is it different from a typical phone?

Whereas the former is equipped with applications, social media services, a camera, and other various smart features, the latter represents one of the most primitive gadgets there can be. This means that it lacks both significant storage space and any advanced technology whatsoever.

The main advantage of the phone is said to be in its simplicity, since the gadget does not have too many options where data can accumulate. Moreover, it is not expected to last very long, as it needs to be disposed of as soon as it completes its assigned task.

Why is it difficult to use it in India?

In India, obtaining a SIM card requires you to present proof of your identity, meaning that Aadhaar is mandatory. As a result, it is almost impossible to use a phone without having valid identification. Otherwise, legal issues will arise, resulting in hefty fines and even imprisonment.

Is it truly completely secure?

In movies, these devices are often portrayed as being completely untraceable; however, reality may differ slightly. It would be inaccurate to claim that any device is entirely "track-proof," as certain information can still be linked back through network operators and service providers. Nevertheless, due to their limited usage and minimal data footprint, they are generally considered to offer a higher degree of privacy compared to standard mobile phones.
