If 2025 was louder, crazier, and more wearisome than usual, it was not all in your head. The year pounded on like an endless loop of outrage, each fresh scandal bleeding into the next and the next, with an all-too-brief pause to breathe. No sector was left unscathed, whether politics, entertainment, sports, or, yes, comedy.
The year 2025 can be said to be one of “ups and downs,” but it is nowhere near enough to put into context what really happened. For many, the year just flew by; for others, every week had to come with one question: What’s next? Over courtroom arguments to what appeared on timelines, no one could just fade away with all these arguments, as it ended up as a kaleshi year for all to see on social media.

When comedy became a flashpoint
The controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent hit the fan in February, with no end to the outrage in sight. The controversy began with a statement by a content creator named Ranveer Allahbadia that aired during an episode of a YouTuber, Samay Raina’s series, which included many popular YouTubers like Apoorva Mukhija, Ashish Chanchlani, and Jaspreet Singh.
Then followed what could have been expected but remained intense, the FIRs in multiple states, notices from the National Commission for Women, to finally reach the Supreme Court. The YouTube show got cancelled, and many YouTubers went underground for weeks before resurfacing.
A voter row that traveled across continents
The issue continued, as in November, a debate about Special Intensive Revision (SIR) electoral rolls took an unexpected turn. A Brazilian woman named Larissa Nery noticed that her picture had allegedly been used several times in voter lists from Haryana. Congress Party chief Rahul Gandhi pointed out the picture as a sign of irregularities, thrusting this issue directly into the political arena.
Later, Larissa revealed that she was flooded with calls and messages, whereas the Election Commission and the BJP denied any charges and justified the revision process.
Comedy, speech and street reactions
March kicked off with comedian Kunal Kamra embroiled in a new controversy in connection with comments he’d made in a show referencing Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. This resulted in actual vandalism, with a Mumbai studio being targeted, and arrests following suit.

Language, identity politics, and increased tensions
During mid-year, the issue of the Marathi language arose in Maharashtra. Incidents involving beating up people, property damage, and politics made the headlines, thereby involving the Supreme Court in the discussion through a PIL.
Visit of Messi and a messed-up welcome
Nothing, not even a football match, could remain untouched by the sentiment. Lionel Messi’s much-awaited Indian sojourn began in Kolkata in disarray and ire as fans were frustrated in their efforts to lay eyes on him. This resulted in arrest, resignation, and a legal case. The subsequent events, however, were much smoother, but discontent among fans continued. But through all of this, 2025 was remembered not for that single moment but for how rarely the noise ever stopped.
