Travellers planning a trip to Japan may need to revise their budgets as the country is set to increase visa fees for foreign nationals from July 1. The revised charges will apply to various visa categories, including short-term tourist and business visas, affecting travellers from several countries, including India.

The move comes as Japan continues to witness a surge in international arrivals and seeks to align visa processing costs with administrative expenses.

What's changing from July 1?

Under the revised fee structure, applicants seeking entry visas to Japan will have to pay higher processing charges than before. The increase applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry visas issued through Japanese diplomatic missions and visa application centres.

The new fees will be applicable to visas issued on or after July 1, regardless of when the application was submitted.

How much will the new visa cost?

The fee for a single-entry visa will increase from 3,000 yen to 4,000 yen, while a multiple-entry visa will rise from 6,000 yen to 8,000 yen.

Transit visa fees are also expected to increase from 700 yen to 1,000 yen.

The exact amount paid by applicants may vary depending on exchange rates and service charges levied by authorised visa centres.

What does it mean for Indian travellers?

For most Indian tourists, the increase is unlikely to significantly alter overall travel costs, as visa fees represent only a small portion of the total expense of a Japan trip.

However, frequent travellers, business visitors and families applying for multiple visas may notice a higher overall cost when planning their journeys.

Why is Japan increasing visa fees?

As per the report of Times of India, Japanese authorities have indicated that the revision is aimed at reflecting rising administrative and operational costs associated with visa processing.

Many countries periodically review visa fees to account for inflation, staffing expenses and improvements in digital processing systems.

Japan remains a popular destination

Despite the fee hike, Japan continues to attract growing numbers of Indian travellers thanks to its blend of modern cities, cultural heritage, natural beauty and improved connectivity.

Destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka remain among the most sought-after locations for Indian tourists exploring the country.
