BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday delivered a strong political message shortly after being elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party and the chief minister of the incoming government in West Bengal. Addressing party MLAs and leaders, Adhikari stressed collective leadership and said the new administration would function without internal ego clashes.

Praising the party’s internal democratic process in selecting the chief minister, Adhikari said the BJP government would work with unity at its core. “Not I, but we... the Bharatiya Janata Party government will work on the principle of ‘we’,” he said during his address.

Focus on poll promises and governance

The BJP leader assured supporters that the new government would move ahead with the commitments made during the Assembly election campaign. Referring to the guarantees announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Adhikari said the administration would work to fulfil the expectations of the people of Bengal through coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state.

He also said the BJP’s election manifesto would be implemented in phases over time. According to Adhikari, the party’s governance model would focus on development and public welfare while attempting to widen its support base ahead of future elections.

“By doing positive work and implementing the manifesto, we will bring more than 60 per cent of the people to our side in the next election,” Adhikari said.

Promise of investigations into corruption and atrocities

During his speech, Adhikari also referred to the corruption allegations raised by the BJP against the previous Trinamool Congress government during the election campaign. He said the BJP had presented a detailed “charge sheet” before the polls outlining alleged irregularities and corruption during the Trinamool era.

“Commissions will be set up to investigate all incidents of atrocities against women. Commissions will be formed with retired judges to investigate all the corruption that has taken place. The guilty will be punished,” he said.

Calling for a fresh rebuilding of West Bengal, Adhikari urged party legislators to work collectively to meet public expectations.

At the end of his speech, he asked all BJP MLAs present at the meeting to stand and applaud continuously for one minute in honour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
