A political controversy in Kolkata over properties allegedly linked to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has taken an unexpected turn, with fresh claims pointing to possible misreporting and mistaken identity.
When names collide: The ‘Abhishek Banerjee’ puzzle
Amid allegations by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and notices issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, a viral video has complicated the narrative. The video features an ordinary resident named Abhishek Banerjee, who claims that his property has been wrongly dragged into the controversy simply because of a name match.
In the video, the resident can be heard saying, "Yes, we have been facing this issue. Repeatedly, media persons are coming. Firstly, the defaming thing has surrounded my property address, where I live with my family. I have two daughters."

He further adds that the “other residents of the apartment are also facing the same harassment. There has been a lot of misleading speculations surrounding the address".
The man also mentions that his wife’s name is Sayani Ghosh, adding another layer to the confusion, as the name matches that of Saayoni Ghosh, who was briefly linked to the property in online discussions.
Political heat, data confusion
Earlier, the BJP had released a list of 43 properties allegedly linked to the TMC leader and his associates, reportedly sourced from KMC records. However, critics from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) argued that the list may have been generated through a simple name-based search, raising questions about its accuracy.
TMC leader Saket Gokhale had pointedly asked, "Is there only one person with the name Abhishek Banerjee in all of Kolkata?"

From allegations to amusement
While the political back-and-forth continues, the situation has also sparked a lighter, almost ironic reaction online. After all, in a city as large as Kolkata, sharing a name with a public figure is hardly unusual. But in this case, it appears to have briefly turned an ordinary citizen into the centre of a high-voltage political narrative.
The episode highlights how quickly information can blur into misinterpretation, especially when names, data, and politics intersect.
For now, what began as a serious property controversy has also become a cautionary tale of how “same name, different person” can sometimes lead to very real confusion.
