Kolkata has experienced a sudden and unexpected shift in the weather over the past few days. Thunderstorms and rain have brought much-needed respite from the increasing heat. This sudden shift in the weather is the result of moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal along with weather disturbances, which have caused the weather to become cooler in the city.
This sudden shift in the weather has been quite pronounced. The maximum temperature has reduced to 23 degrees Celsius, which is much lower than the average. The minimum temperature has also reduced, making the weather quite cool. On Saturday, the maximum temperature was 23.2 degrees Celsius, according to the Alipore weather office. The minimum temperature was 19.7 degrees Celsius, which is 4.4 degrees below normal.
The sudden drop has been striking enough to blur the usual distinction between mid-March and winter-like conditions.

Thunderstorm activity begins to ease
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the strong thunderstorm phase is now slowly dissipating. On Sunday, March 22, there are no major alerts. The city is expected to have partly cloudy conditions, along with a chance of light rain or isolated spells in some areas.
The maximum temperature is expected to be around 29 degrees, and the minimum will be around 22 degrees. The humidity is expected to be high, ranging from 81 per cent to 95 per cent.
Rain to linger in Bengal
The weather pattern is not limited to Kolkata alone. Scattered rainfall is likely across several districts of both North and South Bengal on Sunday. However, the intensity is expected to reduce in South Bengal after Monday.

On the other hand, districts in North Bengal such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri may experience scattered rain and gusty winds until Wednesday.
For now, Kolkata is expected to experience comfortable weather with temperatures remaining slightly lower than normal. There is a possibility of scattered rain and clouds lingering for a few more days before the usual March heat returns.
