An Indian national was killed in an attack on Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday, according to the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, as Iranian missile and drone strikes hit civilian targets in the Gulf state and disrupted airport operations.

Kuwaiti authorities said one person died in the attack, while the health ministry said at least 63 people were injured, including airport workers and passengers.

The strike damaged airport facilities and led to a temporary suspension of commercial flights.

Diplomatic courtesies in troubled times

The Indian Embassy said it was in touch with the bereaved family and coordinating with Kuwaiti authorities.

In a statement posted on X, the mission said it was offering ā€œdeepest condolencesā€ and was working to provide ā€œall possible support and assistanceā€ to the family of the deceased as well as to those injured in the incident.

The Ministry of External Affairs also condemned the attack, saying ā€œcivilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targetedā€ during the conflict in West Asia.

Order restored after a most uneasy interlude

Officials in Kuwait said the attack caused severe damage to Terminal 1 of the airport and forced a temporary halt in air traffic, though operations later resumed from Terminal 4 after safety checks.

NDTV reported that 25 ambulances were dispatched to the airport and that the injuries included head wounds, cerebral haemorrhages, amputations and blast injuries.

The Indian mission said Indian nationals affected by the attack were being assisted, while Indian missions across the region remained on alert.

Tempers rise across the Gulf

The strike came amid a wider escalation in Gulf tensions.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed the attack and said it was retaliation for US actions against an Iranian oil tanker and island.

Hindustan Times reported that the incident formed part of a broader wave of missile and drone strikes across the region, with Kuwait among the states directly affected.
