‘Darkest day of my life’: Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal’s son Agnivesh passes away at 49 in US

Agnivesh Agarwal, the eldest son of Vedanta's chairman and mining tycoon Anil Agarwal, died suddenly of a cardiac arrest in the US. He was 49 years old. His death has been widely mourned by political leaders and industry peers on social media platforms.

Sudden cardiac arrest in the US

Agnivesh was at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, recovering from injuries following a skiing accident. Despite an initial recovery and the best efforts of doctors treating him, he experienced a sudden cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated.

Anil Agarwal, in an emotional post on X, said that it was “the darkest day” of his life. He wrote, “My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was just 49 years old, healthy, full of life, and dreams. Following a skiing accident in the US, he was recovering well in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us.”

“No words can describe the pain of a parent who must bid goodbye to his child. A son is not meant to leave before his father. This loss has shattered us in ways we are still trying to comprehend”, he further wrote.

“Beta, you will live on in our hearts, in our work, and in every life you touched. I do not know how to walk this path without you, but I will try carrying your light forward”, he concluded.

Who was Agnivesh Agarwal?

Agnivesh Agarwal, the eldest son of billionaire Anil Agarwal, was an accomplished entrepreneur and business leader. He studied at Mayo College, Ajmer. He founded Fujairah Gold and was chairman of Hindustan Zinc and a director on the Vedanta group firm Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL).

Tributes pour in from leaders and industry figures

Condolences quickly began flooding social media. Union minister Kiren Rijiju wrote, “Me & my wife are heartbroken by the tragic demise of your charismatic son Agnivesh. Anil Ji, I'm sending our deepest condolences and offering heartfelt prayers May god provide you and family the strength to bear this unimaginable loss.”

Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also expressed grief, writing, “Saddened to learn about the demise of your beloved son, Agnivesh. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and admirers. May the departed soul attain Sadgati. May God grant immense strength to the family to bear this irreparable loss. Om Shanti.”

“This is such a tragic news. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family Anil Ji. Losing a loved one is never easy. I hope you find the strength to overcome this loss. Prayers for the sadgati of Agnivesh's soul. Om Shanti”, wrote Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw expressed her grief writing, “My heartfelt condolences to you and Kiranji. This is so very tragic and I can hear the profound grief in your words. May Agnivesh’s soul rest in peace. Om Shanthi.”
