Air India has cancelled all flights to and from New York and Newark for February 23, as a powerful winter storm is headed towards the East Coast of the US. The airline has taken this decision as a precautionary measure due to severe weather conditions expected on February 22 and 23.
Air India issues travel advisory
In a statement released on Sunday, the airline said operations were called off as a precaution due to severe weather predicted for February 22 and 23. Heavy snowfall is expected across New York, New Jersey and adjoining areas, which could significantly impact flight schedules.
āIn view of the safety, well-being and convenience of our passengers and crew, all Air India flights to and from New York and Newark have been cancelled on 23 February,ā the airline said. It added that dedicated teams are assisting affected passengers with rebooking options and necessary travel support.

Delta Air Lines announces proactive cancellations
US carrier Delta Air Lines has also cancelled flights due to the impending winter storm, named Winter Storm Hernando. Delta Air Lines stated that it has started taking measures from Sunday to Monday to reduce the risks of operations.

The airline has cancelled flights at major airports on the East Coast, including Boston, JFK, and LaGuardia airports. Delta Air Lines has asked passengers to reschedule their flights without any additional charges as the winter storm is headed towards the US East Coast.
Blizzard warnings across the East Coast
A blizzard warning has been issued for New York City, as well as parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. The National Weather Service has extended snow and storm warnings from the Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast regions, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected until Monday.
Reportedly, the weather forecast predicts snowfall of up to 1.5 feet in and around New York City, including Long Island. If the storm develops as expected, this will be the first blizzard warning for New York City since 2017.

Strong winds and power outage risk
Wind speeds are expected to be in the range of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts of up to 55 mph, particularly from New Jersey to southeast New England, Sunday night.
The winter storm watch for Washington, DC, and Baltimore remains in effect as the region prepares for deteriorating weather conditions.
