Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday said Russia is passing through a “difficult period” as the war in Ukraine continues, while stressing that the country will overcome the pressures it faces and remain focused on national security and border protection.
He made the comments at a conference of the ruling United Russia party, speaking as the country prepares for parliamentary elections due in September.

Through the storm with chin held high
Putin told the party gathering that the country’s hardships had made it stronger and offered valuable lessons.
In his remarks, he said, “We are going through a difficult period,” and added that the experience had taught Russia much. He also wished United Russia success in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Putin’s remarks came against the backdrop of continuing Ukrainian drone and missile strikes, alongside Western sanctions imposed over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Addressing party delegates, he said the government was aware of the problems confronting the country and was responding to them. He said Russia would ensure “the security of both the country and our citizens” and protect the “inviolability” of its borders. He also said Russia would overcome the threats it currently faces, including attacks on its territory and infrastructure.

Politics and peril share the same stage
TASS, with noted input from AFP, said Putin’s comments were delivered at a party congress that effectively linked the war, domestic security concerns and the political calendar ahead of the September vote.
The remarks added to a familiar Kremlin message: that wartime strain remains severe, but manageable, and that the state is positioned to absorb it.
