A 23-year-old man accused of raping and killing a 22-year-old IIT graduate in south Delhi allegedly travelled to the capital by hitching a ride in an ambulance from Rajasthan’s Alwar, investigators said.

According to the Delhi Police, the accused, identified as Rahul, is suspected to have committed another sexual assault in Alwar hours before arriving in Delhi. A separate FIR has been registered in Rajasthan, and both state police forces are coordinating the investigation. Officials said the accused had negotiated a ride to Delhi for ₹5,000–₹6,000 but fled without paying after reaching the city.

Entry into house and sequence of events

Investigators said the accused targeted a residence in Kailash Hills where he had previously worked as a domestic help. CCTV footage shows him entering the gated premises early Wednesday morning and later leaving in a different set of clothes while carrying a backpack.

Police believe he was familiar with the building’s layout, including security systems, passcodes and the location of spare keys.

“The accused had knowledge of multiple access points and managed to enter despite layered security,” a senior officer said. The victim, the daughter of a senior IRS officer, was alone at home at the time. Her parents had stepped out and returned around 8 am to find her unconscious. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.

Early findings point to rape with strangulation through the use of a mobile charger cord. The exact cause of death will be determined later after the post-mortem report.

CCTV trail and arrest

The police used surveillance camera evidence and information from his mobile to track him down, ultimately arresting him from a hotel in Dwarka.

It is believed that he could also have looted ₹2-2.5 lakhs from the premises. Arrest and recovery are made, but more information will be revealed soon.

Earlier case in Rajasthan under probe

In a separate case registered in Alwar, the accused is alleged to have entered a woman’s home, sexually assaulted her and attempted to strangle her. The survivor reported that she had been threatened with harm if she approached authorities.

Police sources said the accused had recently been removed from his job at the Delhi residence and may have been under financial stress. His background, including alleged debts and substance use, is also being examined as part of the investigation.

Authorities said a chargesheet is being prepared and strict action will be pursued.
