India is set to restart issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals, marking a notable step in restoring ties more than five years after the suspension that followed the Galwan Valley clash. The move signals a gradual return to normalcy in bilateral engagement between the two countries.

Revised visa guidelines in place

Officials said the Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced updated guidelines for granting regular visas to applicants from mainland China, as well as Hong Kong and Macau. Tourist visas will now be processed under standard procedures applicable to all foreign nationals.

Applicants will need valid passports and must complete both online and offline documentation. Some restrictions remain in place, including a ban on carrying satellite phones under tourist visas, reflecting ongoing security considerations.

Gradual easing of restrictions

The decision follows a series of steps taken over the past year to improve engagement. In 2025, India and China agreed to resume direct passenger flights. The reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra also marked a key moment in rebuilding travel links.

These developments indicate a phased approach to restoring connectivity after years of limited movement between the two countries.

Restoring people-to-people ties

Tourist visa services had been suspended after the 2020 border clash, which led to a sharp downturn in relations. India had introduced stricter visa norms and tightened scrutiny of Chinese investments in the aftermath.

Recent months have seen a gradual shift. Business visa processes have been eased, and diplomatic exchanges at various levels have resumed. The return of tourist visas is being viewed as part of a broader effort to revive people-to-people contact.

While several issues in the bilateral relationship remain unresolved, the resumption of tourist visas reflects a willingness on both sides to reopen channels of engagement. Travel, tourism, and cultural exchanges are expected to play a role in rebuilding trust over time.
