A Polish truck driver has been sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison after being caught smuggling more than $8.4 million worth of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of underwear and clothing from Kim Kardashian’s “Skims” brand. The case was handled by Chelmsford Crown Court following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA), per a report by NDTV.

The accused, identified as 40-year-old Jakub Jan Konkel, was found guilty of hiding the drugs inside his truck, which was transporting 28 pallets of Skims clothing from the Netherlands. Authorities discovered the cocaine during the investigation, leading to his conviction and sentencing.

How was the hidden cocaine discovered inside the truck at Harwich port

In September last year, Konkel, who is originally from northern Poland, was stopped by Border Force officers at the Port of Harwich in Essex after arriving on a ferry from the Hook of Holland. Officials scanned his heavy goods vehicle using X-ray equipment, which revealed the hidden illegal drugs inside the truck.

As per NDTV reports, investigators later found that the shipment of clothing itself was completely legitimate, and neither the exporter nor the importer had any connection to the smuggled cocaine.

Did Konkel initially deny involvement in the cocaine smuggling case

As per NDTV reports, the investigation revealed that Konkel had stopped during the journey to collect 90 packages of cocaine weighing around 198 pounds. He then secretly placed the wrapped drug bundles inside a hidden compartment built into the truck.

At first, Konkel denied having any knowledge about the Class A drugs found in the vehicle. However, he later pleaded guilty to drug smuggling and admitted that he had agreed to transport the cocaine in exchange for a payment of 4,500 euros.

What did NCA officials say

NCA operations manager Paul Orchard said that organised crime groups often use drivers like Konkel to transport illegal drugs across international borders by hiding them inside genuine commercial shipments. He explained that criminals take advantage of legitimate transport systems to secretly move large quantities of drugs.

“Organised crime groups use corrupt drivers like Konkel to move Class A drugs, often hidden on entirely legitimate loads such as this," said Orchard, as per NDTV reports. “The detection and investigation have removed a significant amount of cocaine whose profits are lost to the crime group behind the smuggling attempt, and with Konkel they've lost an important enabler," he added.
