The Centre on Thursday sought to dispel apprehensions about fuel supplies, assuring the public that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country, despite the global fuel supply chain being hit due to the ongoing West Asian conflict.

In this context, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a statement assuring the public that the fuel supply situation in India is “secure and under firm control.” The Ministry has also urged the public not to panic and believe in rumors floating on social media.

The Centre’s statement comes in the wake of reports and social media messages indicating disruptions in LPG supplies and changes in the refill cycle, which the Centre has described as “incorrect and misleading.”

Fuel supply stable, no rationing anywhere

Officials emphasised that all retail fuel outlets across the country are operating normally, with no instructions issued for rationing. India, a major refiner and exporter of petroleum products, continues to maintain steady domestic supply.

The ministry noted that temporary reports of shortages in some areas were linked to panic buying rather than actual supply disruptions. Oil companies, it added, have been operating depots round-the-clock and have extended credit limits to fuel stations to maintain uninterrupted distribution.

India’s crude oil requirements for the next 60 days have already been secured, while refineries are operating at more than 100% capacity, ensuring adequate availability of petrol and diesel.

LPG supply assured despite global disruptions

Addressing concerns over cooking gas availability, the ministry said LPG supply remains stable, with no shortage reported across the country.

Domestic refinery output has increased significantly, while imports continue from multiple sources including the United States, Russia and Australia. Around one month of LPG supply is already secured, with additional cargoes on the way. Officials said demand had briefly surged due to panic buying but has since normalised.

The government also clarified that the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections is not due to any shortage of LPG.

India’s gas infrastructure has seen considerable growth in the last few years, with the city gas infrastructure spreading to over 300 areas and domestic gas connections exceeding 1.5 crore.

Govt flags misinformation campaign

The government expressed concerns over what it said was a coordinated effort to spread misinformation about the fuel shortage in the country.

The government stated that false information is being circulated on social media platforms, falsely linking the fuel crises in other countries with India.

The government warned that spreading false information on essential commodities can lead to legal action and advised people to only look at government communications on the matter.
