An amazing picture usually takes shape at the airport whenever there is a significant event happening in the world of aviation. Fire trucks align themselves on either side and spray water in a way that an arch of water is created above the runway as an aircraft taxi. As the airplane passes under this arch, it is referred to as a "water salute", a practice traditionally conducted in order to honor milestones in aviation.

A spectacular show in the sky

A water salute involves the formation of an arch by spraying jets of water from fire service vehicles for the airplane to pass under. This ritual is conducted only on rare and important occasions, and it holds a very high degree of prestige in the world of aviation.

It is an extremely well-choreographed activity. The fire trucks are lined up on opposite sides of the taxi or runways at particular angles. Then they begin to spray the jets which collide to form an arch above. Rainbow formation sometimes occurs depending upon how sunlight interacts with the sprayed water.

Even though it looks risky, the practice is perfectly safe.

When and why it is used

The water salute is not a routine occurrence. It is typically reserved for moments of significance, both celebratory and emotional.

Airports and airlines use it to mark milestones such as the launch of a new route, the first arrival at a newly opened airport, or the introduction of a new aircraft. In India, one such instance was the first commercial flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport, which was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute.

The tradition is also used to honour individuals and endings. Retiring pilots, final flights of aircraft, or the closure of long-standing routes are often marked with this gesture. In some cases, returning sports teams or special charter flights are also greeted with a water salute.

A tradition that blends emotion and spectacle

Apart from being visually striking, the water salute is a highly emotive gesture. It represents a point of acknowledgment, whether at the start, end, or landmark occasion of a voyage.

From the perspective of the passengers, it turns a regular cab ride into something much more memorable. From the standpoint of the airline personnel, it continues to be a humble salute to all those involved.
