Asha Bhosle’s final musical appearance feels both poetic and fitting. Social media users say it brought a reflective, spiritual close to one of Indian music’s longest and most varied careers.
The track, released on Gorillaz’s India-inspired album The Mountain (Parvat), featured the singer’s voice in a collaboration built around Indian classical textures and a meditation on life and release.
Her last song, The Shadowy Light, was released in March 2026, just weeks before the legendary singer died at the age of 92.
What’s the song?
For an artist whose career spanned decades and genres, The Shadowy Light was an appropriate last studio release. Gruff Rhys, flautist Ajay Prasanna, and sarod players Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash joined Bhosle's voice on the song, which combined Indian classical influences with experimental alt-pop.

The album also contained contributions from sitar players. Anoushka Shankar and vocalist Asha Puthli highlight Gorillaz's diverse approach to the project.
Music has rowed her across
Even in her final recording, Asha Bhosle remained true to what defined her legacy: fearless experimentation, emotional depth, and an ability to connect across cultures. Bhosle said the song had "deep meaning" for her in a social media post quoted by Hindustan Times. She added that the song represented her trip and the concept of moksha, or ultimate freedom, and that she came up with it while reflecting on her time in Varanasi, the Ganges, and her perspective on life.

According to her, the song is a metaphor for her life, a journey over a river moulded by purpose, love, and music. She described music as the "boatman," helping her navigate life's journey.
