Padma awards honour Dharmendra posthumously, Alka Yagnik and Mammootty among recipients

Veteran actor Dharmendra and violinist N Rajam receive Padma Vibhushan, while Alka Yagnik and Mammootty are honoured with Padma Bhushan this year.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced Padma awards for several prominent figures from Indian music, cinema and advertising. Among the most notable recognitions this year, veteran actor Dharmendra is being honoured posthumously with the Padma Vibhushan. Renowned violinist N Rajam is the other recipient of the Padma Vibhushan.

Singer Alka Yagnik, actor Mammootty and advertising filmmaker Piyush Pandey have been named among the Padma Bhushan awardees this year.

Posthumous honours and award details

Among the Padma Shri recipients are actors Satish Shah, R Madhavan, Anil Rastogi, Aravind Baidya, Rajendra Prasad and Bharat Singh Bharti. From West Bengal, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee is receiving the Padma Shri.

The complete list includes five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri awards. Of these, 16 honours have been given posthumously. Along with Dharmendra, Satish Shah and Piyush Pandey have also been honoured posthumously.

The Padma Vibhushan is considered India’s second-highest civilian award, followed by the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri. Dharmendra had earlier received the Padma Bhushan in 2012. Mammootty was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998, with a gap of nearly 27 years between his two Padma honours.
