The much-anticipated biographical film on Michael Jackson has made a solid impact at the Indian box office within its first two days. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film has drawn significant footfall, reflecting the late pop icon’s enduring popularity in the country.

Strong day 2 growth in India

According to trade estimates, Michael earned Rs 5 crore net on its second day across 3,190 shows. This pushed its total India net collection to Rs 10.30 crore, with gross earnings reaching Rs 12.36 crore. The film has managed to outperform competing domestic releases, climbing to the top spot at the Indian box office.

The film had already shown momentum before its official release. Paid previews on Thursday contributed Rs 2.40 crore, followed by over Rs 4 crore on day one. Its opening day closed at Rs 5.50 crore net and Rs 6.60 crore gross, marking one of the strongest starts for a musical biopic in India.

Outperforms global musical biopics

In terms of opening performance, Michael has surpassed films like Elvis and Bohemian Rhapsody in the Indian market. The early numbers suggest a promising run, especially given the genre’s niche audience.

Global performance so far

While North American figures are yet to be disclosed, the film has already collected around $30 million from international markets, including paid previews. Of this, approximately $700K has come from India. The film is reportedly setting strong benchmarks for musical biographies across several territories.

Cast and storyline

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film stars Jaafar Jackson in the lead role. The cast also includes Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.

The narrative traces Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days in Gary, Indiana, to global superstardom. It covers key phases of his life, including his time with the Jackson 5, the success of Off the Wall, and the record-breaking era of Thriller.
