A new legal wrinkle has emerged in the Tamil cinema space as actor-filmmaker Dhanush has been served a legal notice by Thenandal Films regarding a delay in a project, which has its roots in a commitment that was given close to a decade ago. The news comes on the heels of a spate of news emanating from Bollywood regarding actors and their contracts.
Legal notice over 2016 film commitment
The legal notice to Dhanush has been given regarding a commitment that was given to a movie titled 'Naan Rudhran' in 2016. The production house has alleged that Dhanush had given a commitment to work on this movie, but he later went back on his commitment. However, he promised to make amends for this by directing and acting in a movie that would be produced by this production house, according to The Indian Express report.

'Project stalled midway due to Dhanush'
However, the project ran into a roadblock midway through, and Thenandal Films has blamed Dhanush for this. The production house claims to have invested nearly Rs 20 crore in advance payments and pre-production, which includes the money given to actors Nagarjuna and SJ Suryah, who were supposed to be a part of the project at different stages. But the production house claims that the project came to a standstill as there was no complete script and also because the shooting dates were shifted for other projects.
Compensation demand
In a legal notice sent by advocate A Chidambaram, Thenandal Films has requested Dhanush to confirm within a week if he intends to adhere to his previous commitment to allocate dates by the end of 2025 to complete the project. However, if Dhanush fails to do so, the production house is asking for compensation of Rs 1 crore in addition to the Rs 20 crore already spent, stated The Indian Express report.
Ongoing projects and past disputes
Dhanush is keeping himself busy despite the legal issues. He is currently working on the film 'Kara' under the direction of Vignesh Raja. He has also announced a new film with the director of the film 'Amaran', Rajkumar Periasamy.

Dhanush recently had to deal with another legal issue with actress Nayanthara pertaining to the use of behind-the-scenes footage from the film 'Naanum Rowdy Dhaan' that was included in the actress’ documentary 'Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale' on Netflix. The case was being heard at the Madras High Court.
