The Kolkata Literary Meet turned into a space for thoughtful conversations as music and literature came together at the Alipur Museum. On the sidelines of the event, Anupam Roy exclusively spoke to News Ei Samay, sharing his thoughts on artificial intelligence, creativity, Kolkata and his deep connection with Jadavpur University.

Speaking candidly, Roy reflected on change, learning and the idea of creativity in an evolving world, while also offering insights into his personal journey as a student and an artist.

AI, creativity and the idea of evolution

Addressing concerns around artificial intelligence replacing human creativity, Roy made it clear that he does not see AI as a threat. He clearly said, “Not really,” adding that musical instruments, EDM equipment and even music creation apps have always evolved with technology. According to him, “the way things will be created will be different. It does not mean end of anything.”

Drawing a simple comparison, he explained, “Before the calculator was invented, people used to do those 10-digit multiplications by hand only,” but calculators did not replace humans. Emphasising growth through progress, Roy said, “humans are supposed to stand on the shoulders of giants,” adding that once something exists, “there is no need to rediscover the wheel. There is no end to creativity.”

Jadavpur University and the joy of learning

Talking about his college days, Roy described Jadavpur University as “a premium institute in our city", and said people should be proud of it for the quality of students it produces. Calling his time there special, he said, "My life in Jadavpur was fantastic. I am blessed. And since it is a government institute, there is one very important point that the key structure is set up at such a level that people from all strata of society can afford this education. You are getting a premium education at a very low cost. So, we should be proud of such institutes in our country, and Jadavpur University is one of them."

When asked to choose between Anupam Roy the singer and Anupam Roy the student, his answer was clear: “The student,” explaining, “Because I love learning.”

At the literary meet, Roy also recommended Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 'Hundred Years of Solitude', calling it an inspiring book that takes readers through “multiple emotions,” while offering insights into politics, relationships and life through powerful craft.
