Vijaypat Singhania, former chairman and managing director of the Raymond Group and a well-known figure in India’s corporate world, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday night. Singhania was 87 years old and was admitted to a hospital a day ago after his health declined due to old-age problems. The last rites of Singhania will be performed on Sunday at Chandanwadi crematorium.
Who was Vijaypat Singhania?
Born into a well-known business family, Singhania has headed the company for over two decades and has transformed it into a conglomerate. The company, which was acquired by his family from ED Sassoon & Co in 1944 as a manufacturer of woollen blankets, has grown significantly under his leadership. Under his leadership, the company has expanded its presence in synthetic fabrics, denim, steel, industrial files, and cement, apart from reinforcing its image as one of India’s most recognised apparel brands.

During the later years of his tenure, some of the ventures of the group experienced financial stress due to an economic downturn, especially in the steel and cement sectors. These ventures were later divested. Singhania later handed over the leadership of the group to his son Gautam Singhania and took on the role of chairman emeritus.

Aviation passion and record feat
Outside the boardroom, Singhania was an avid enthusiast for aviation. A former sheriff of Mumbai, he pursued his passion for flying with considerable enthusiasm. In November 2005, when he was 67, he registered a world record by flying to 69,000 feet in a hot air balloon. His hot air balloon ride began from the racecourse in Mumbai and ended near Nashik, covering a distance in five hours in a pressurised capsule.
