Centre lifts domestic airfare cap, warns airlines against price surge amid fuel costs

The Centre has lifted the temporary cap on domestic airfares, which had been in place since December, saying conditions have stabilised. The move comes as airlines face rising fuel costs and operational challenges due to the ongoing US–Iran conflict, which has also disrupted international routes.

The aviation ministry, however, cautioned airlines against excessive pricing, warning that fare controls could be brought back if needed. Industry body Federation of Indian Airlines had earlier urged the government to remove the caps, citing heavy losses and rising costs.

With the order taking effect from March 23, airlines are now free to set ticket prices, though they have been asked to keep fares reasonable and transparent, especially during peak travel periods.

Delhi and parts of the NCR woke up to shallow fog on Saturday morning, an uncommon sight for late March. Several areas recorded reduced visibility, with the lowest at 1,200 metres between 7.30 am and 8.30 am at Safdarjung and between 8 am and 9 am at Palam, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
