Jaishankar updates Rajya Sabha on West Asia crisis, says, ‘67,000 Indians have returned’

The second phase of Parliament’s Budget Session began today at 11:00 am. Soon after the session started, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha on the escalating situation in West Asia, stating that the government is closely monitoring developments in the region. Jaishankar informed the House that the government has been actively working to bring Indian nationals back home amid the crisis. He said, "Till yesterday, almost 67,000 of our nationals have crossed international borders to return...Every effort is being made to bring back our people from West Asia." He also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the situation. According to Jaishankar, several ministries are coordinating their efforts to respond to the developments and ensure that India’s interests and citizens are protected. Highlighting the broader implications of the conflict, Jaishankar said the developments in West Asia are a major concern for India because of the country’s close ties with the region. “This ongoing conflict is of particular concern to India. We are a neighbouring region, and have obvious stakes that West Asia remains stable. There are one crore Indians who live and work in the Gulf nations. In Iran, too, there are a few thousand Indians for study or employment. The region is key to our energy security and includes many important suppliers of oil and gas….Serious supply chain disruptions and a climate of instability are serious issues.”
