Switching metro lines in Delhi could soon become far more seamless, with work underway on the capital’s first double-decker skywalk at Madhuban Chowk. Designed to improve connectivity between the Delhi Metro Red Line and the Delhi Metro Magenta Line, the project addresses a long-standing issue where commuters currently have to step out, navigate traffic and often rely on last-mile options like e-rickshaws. Once completed, the structure is expected to transform this inconvenient stretch into a smooth and uninterrupted walking experience.
A two-level design to separate commuter and pedestrian flow
According to NDTV, the upper deck will provide a direct paid area connection between the Red and Magenta Line platforms, allowing passengers to switch lines without exiting the station or passing through ticketing again. The lower deck, meanwhile, will cater to general pedestrian movement by linking the station directly to Rohini Court, making access easier for daily visitors and legal professionals. This separation ensures that both metro users and pedestrians can move efficiently without overlapping congestion.

Faster, safer and more accessible commuting
The skywalk is expected to significantly cut down travel time across the roughly 300 metre stretch that currently involves crossing one of the area’s busiest intersections. By eliminating the need to deal with traffic, the project improves both safety and convenience. Accessibility has also been built into the design, with provisions such as lifts, escalators and ramps to ensure ease of use for senior citizens and differently abled passengers. The improved connectivity to Rohini Court will also benefit lawyers and visitors who frequently travel to the complex.

Project timeline and growing importance of the hub
Being developed jointly by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Public Works Department, the project is estimated to cost around Rs 5 crore and is targeted for completion by September 2026. With the recent expansion of the Magenta Line, enhancing connectivity in the region, Madhuban Chowk is steadily emerging as a key interchange hub in Delhi’s metro network. The upcoming skywalk is likely to play a crucial role in supporting this growth by making transfers quicker, safer and far more commuter-friendly.
