Rumours about a possible lockdown in India have been dismissed by the government, with Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri stating that no such proposal is under consideration. The clarification comes amid rising speculation linked to global developments and recent policy decisions.

Govt calls rumours 'false'

Addressing the speculation, Puri said claims of a lockdown are "completely false" and urged people not to spread misinformation. He described such rumours as "irresponsible and harmful", especially at a time when global conditions remain uncertain.

In a post on X, he added that "we are closely monitoring developments across energy, supply chains, and essential commodities on a real-time basis". He also said the government is taking steps to ensure uninterrupted access to fuel and essential supplies.

Why speculation began

The rumours appear to have gained traction after remarks by Narendra Modi during a recent speech in Parliament. While referring to India's response during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister urged people to remain "prepared and united, just as it had stood together during the COVID-19 pandemic", but did not mention any lockdown.

Search trends and social media posts suggesting a possible nationwide shutdown added to the confusion. Concerns around fuel supply and global tensions also contributed to the spread of these claims.

Govt response amid global uncertainty

Puri noted that the global situation continues to evolve, but said India remains prepared to handle emerging challenges. "India has consistently demonstrated resilience in the face of global uncertainties, and we will continue to act in a timely, proactive, and coordinated manner," he said.

His statement came shortly after the government revised fuel duties amid disruptions linked to the ongoing Iran-US conflict.

Separately, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a reduction in central excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 per litre each for domestic consumption. Export duties were also imposed on diesel and Aviation Turbine Fuel to maintain supply.

"This will provide protection to consumers from rise in prices. Hon. PM @narendramodi has always ensured that citizens are protected from vagaries of supply and costs of essential goods," Sitharaman wrote.
