A 20-year-old marine engineering student died on Sunday when a basketball pole fell on him at his college in Maval taluka, Pune. The victim has been identified as Vishal Verma, a second-year BTech student from Basti district in Uttar Pradesh.
The accident happened around 7.30 am. Verma finished his morning jog and stopped at the basketball court. As he held the rim to do pull-ups, the pole could not take his weight and suddenly snapped and fell down. The metal frame hit his head and caused a serious injury. Students and college staff rushed him to Talegaon General Hospital. He later died from his injuries, as cited by The Times of India.

The accident and investigation
The TOI report cited that the police officials said the incident occurred suddenly, leaving little time for intervention. Officers from Talegaon MIDC Police Station registered a case of accidental death. An officer told news agency IANS, "The post could not sustain the load and collapsed. We have registered a case of accidental death, and further investigation is underway."
Police Inspector Santosh Patil said Verma was returning to his hostel after jogging. He stopped briefly at the basketball ground. He was first taken towards the hostel area and later shifted to the hospital. Sub-Inspector Prashant Relekar said statements are being recorded from students and college staff. The aim is to check if there was any negligence in maintaining the sports infrastructure.
College response
Institute principal Sanjeet Kanungo called it a "very tragic" loss. He confirmed the frame collapsed while Verma attempted pull-ups on the hoop, causing a fatal head injury. The institute is co-operating with authorities as the probe continues. It is also reported that the student had took admission in the four-year course in 2024 which was set to conclude in 2028.

A repeated pattern
This tragedy echoes two similar deaths in Haryana in November 2025. Both occurred within 48 hours in Rohtak and Bahadurgarh. A 16-year-old state-level player died after briefly hanging from a rim during a dunk attempt. Another teenager died earlier when a corroded pole fell during practice. Both incidents caused outrage and exposed poor maintenance. Authorities ordered inspections, removal of rusted equipment, and accountability checks, as reported by The Times of India.
