Process of becoming a commercial pilot

Candidates must have passed 12th grade with Physics and Mathematics, in order to become a pilot.

They must also obtain a commercial pilot license (CPL), after completing training from a recognised flying school. This license is issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Obtaining a commercial pilot's license is not easy. It requires completing 200 hours of flight training. Several exams also need to be passed. Besides, the entire process requires a hefty amount of money.

The cost of becoming a pilot generally runs into lakhs of rupees. It can range from approximately Rs 35 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

This depends largely on factors such as the flying school, training hours, and type rating. However, these fees may vary depending on the institute.

Major responsibilities of a pilot

Along with flying the aircraft, a pilot has some important responsibilities.

Before the flight, the pilot must plan for weather conditions, route, air traffic, and alternate airports to avoid any problems during the flight.

Before every flight, the pilot must check the technical condition of the aircraft. This includes fuel, braking system, navigation system, lights, and other essential components.

During the flight, the pilot must maintain complete contact with air traffic control.

If a technical malfunction, bad weather, or any other emergency occurs during a flight, the pilot must use their judgment and quick thinking to make immediate decisions and handle the situation.

How much does a commercial pilot earn?

A fresher pilot with a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) can earn approximately from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh per month.

Experienced pilots with 2-5 years of experience can earn from ₹4 lakh to ₹6 lakh per month.

Captains with more than 5 years of experience can earn from ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh or even more.

This amount can increase by almost ₹2-3 lakh for international flights. A commercial pilot's monthly salary depends on their experience, the type of aircraft they fly, and the routes they operate.
