The Election Commission of India (ECI) has confirmed that all eligible voters will be granted a paid holiday on polling days for the upcoming general election and by-elections in 2026. The move is aimed at ensuring maximum voter participation across states.

Poll schedule across states

According to the ECI, elections will be held in multiple states and Union Territories in April 2026. Polling for Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura is scheduled for April 9, 2026. Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra will go to polls on April 23, 2026.

West Bengal will vote in two phases, with polling set for April 23 (Phase I) and April 29 (Phase II).

Paid leave for voters

The Commission has made it clear that under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, every person employed in any business, trade, industrial undertaking or other establishment will be entitled to a paid holiday on the day of polling. This applies to those eligible to vote in parliamentary, legislative Assembly, or by-elections.

Additionally, employers are not allowed to deduct wages for this leave. The rule applies to all categories of workers, including daily wage and casual workers. Any violation of this provision can lead to penalties for employers.

Workers outside their constituency also covered

The ECI has further clarified that employees working outside their registered constituency will also be eligible for a paid holiday. This includes those employed in industrial or commercial establishments away from their place of voting. The provision is intended to help voters travel and cast their vote without workplace restrictions.
