What is India’s ‘Sudarshan Chakra’? Fourth S-400 unit due by mid-May after key Op Sindoor role

The word ‘Sudarshana’ is derived from two Sanskrit words — Su (सु), meaning ‘good’ or ‘auspicious,’ and Darshana (दर्शन), meaning ‘vision.’

The fourth squadron of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf air defense system is expected to reach India by mid-May. The shipment has already left Russia, and the Indian Air Force is understood to have carried out a pre-dispatch inspection before the system was sent.

Sources told ThePrint that the incoming unit is likely to be deployed along India’s western border with Pakistan, even though the original plan had placed it in the central sector focused on China.

The shift appears to be linked to what officials described as a gap in coverage, despite the existing deployment of two systems in that area. Three of the five S-400 squadrons under the original contract are already operational, while the fifth is expected later this year.

Fourth S-400 unit set to bolster India’s western air defense cover

The S-400 is being presented by the government officials as a key part of the country’s layered air defense network.

The system played a key role during Operation Sindoor, when it helped counter Pakistani aerial threats. It proved its value in the 88-hour conflict that followed, through its mobility and long-range interception capability.

An S-400 battery reportedly achieved the world’s longest confirmed surface-to-air missile strike (314 km), downing a Pakistani AEW&C/ELINT (surveillance) aircraft deep inside hostile territory. The system at Adampur Air Force Station negated drone and missile strikes on Indian cities like Amritsar.

What is ‘Sudarshan Chakra’?

The S-400 Triumf, officially known in India as ‘Sudarshan Chakra,' is a Russian-made long-range surface-to-air missile system designed to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

The Sudarshan Chakra in mythology is described as an all-seeing spinning disc weapon wielded by Lord Vishnu. It cannot be deceived or outrun.

Its modern namesake has a radar that can track targets up to 600 kilometers away and intercept them at ranges of up to 400 kilometers. Each of its squadrons consists of two batteries, each with six launchers, a radar, and a control center supporting up to 128 missiles.

India signed an intergovernmental agreement for five S-400 regiments during the BRICS Summit in October 2016. The Cabinet Committee on Security cleared the acquisition in September 2018 in a deal worth $5.4 billion. It is one of the largest defense acquisitions in Indian history. The system is unified with India's Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS).

India's designation for the S-400, 'Sudarshan Chakra,' is not just a name. It is officially a reflection of the country's deep-rooted cultural heritage and enduring belief in divine protection. Inwardly, it builds domestic confidence.
