The Delhi government is planning to introduce a revised traffic challan system to make enforcement more organised and efficient. This step comes after the Centre made changes to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
According to officials, the new system will be fully digital and time-bound. It is expected to improve rule-following among drivers and reduce delays in settling traffic challans.
New digital process explained
According to a Hindustan Times report, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced that the changes will soon be implemented in the capital. While no exact rollout date has been confirmed, authorities indicated that preparations are already underway.

The chief minister said the new system is designed to be fully digital, time-bound and accountable. “This will ensure better compliance with traffic rules and help reduce road accidents,” she said. The system aims to reduce manual intervention and bring more transparency to enforcement.
Limits on court appeals
According to a Hindustan Times report, officials said that under the revised system, violators will no longer be able to directly approach courts to contest challans. Instead, a structured grievance process will be introduced through an online portal.

As per the Motor Vehicles Rules, the violator will get 45 days to either pay the fine or challenge it before a grievance redressal officer. If no action is taken within this time, the challan will be considered accepted. After that, the payment must be made within the next 30 days.

The upcoming changes reflect a shift towards a more regulated and streamlined traffic management system in Delhi. By setting clear timelines and digital procedures, authorities aim to reduce disputes and delays.
The exact implementation timeline has not yet been finalised. The system is expected to change how traffic violations are processed, with a focus on improving compliance and ensuring accountability through a structured mechanism.
