Long layovers or several hours of waiting at Singapore airports will no longer mean monotonous hours for Indian travellers. The Singapore government has introduced a 'Visa-Free Transit Facility' (VFTF) for Indians, allowing tourists to explore Singapore for up to 96 hours (4 days) without a visa. Certain conditions must be met to avail of this facility.
What is the 96-hour visa-free transit facility?
This facility is available only to passengers using Singapore as a stopover. Under the rule, travellers can explore Singapore city without a visa for up to 96 hours. Citizens of China, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, CIS countries, and India are eligible, though the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will verify documents upon arrival to grant final entry permission.
For Indian citizens, the rule applies only when traveling to or returning from a third country via Singapore. The departure ticket from Singapore must be either by air or sea route.
Conditions and rules to follow
Valid visa from developed countries: Indians must hold a valid visa or long-term pass from at least one of the following countries: America, Britain, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, or Switzerland. The visa must remain valid for at least one month from the date of entry into Singapore.
Return journey with single-entry visa: If an Indian has a single-entry visa, the facility can be used on the return journey via Singapore. However, passengers cannot make any other layovers before returning to India.
Transit versus immigration entry: Passengers staying inside the airport without crossing immigration do not need this facility. If they need to cross immigration to collect luggage or check-in, they must fulfill VFTF requirements.
Budget airline caution: Many budget airlines require passengers to collect luggage and cross immigration during transit. Travelers should confirm with the airline before booking to ensure all VFTF conditions are met.
Health and entry protocols: Tourists must comply with Singapore’s current health rules. Immigration officers will check all aspects before granting entry clearance.
Importance of the facility
This arrangement allows Indian travellers to explore Singapore without applying for a separate visa or incurring extra costs. Long layovers can now be spent enjoying tourist attractions rather than waiting inside the airport.
