If you’re looking to escape Kolkata’s daily hustle and step into a space where history and nature quietly coexist, Chandraketugarh makes for an ideal short getaway. Located near Berachampa in North 24 Parganas, this ancient archaeological site is believed by historians to have once been a thriving settlement along the banks of the Ganges.

Today, its past survives in silence, hidden within earthen mounds, broken bricks, scattered ruins.

A walk through buried history

The heart of Chandraketugarh lies in the area locally known as Khana Mihirer Dhipi. Excavations here have revealed terracotta figurines, coins, ornaments and everyday objects, offering glimpses into an ancient civilisation that once flourished in this region.

As you walk through the site, the remnants of fortifications and settlements emerge subtly from the ground, making the experience both intriguing and contemplative. The calm canals, small water bodies and open fields surrounding the ruins add to the charm, creating a serene rural Bengal landscape that feels far removed from city life.

How to get there?

Reaching Chandraketugarh from Kolkata is fairly easy. You can take a local train from Sealdah Station to Barasat or Berachampa Road Station. From there, the site is about a 20–25 minute auto or toto ride. Several buses heading towards Berachampa are also available from Dharmatala and Sealdah. If you’re travelling by car, the Barasat–Berachampa Road route takes roughly one and a half to two hours, depending on traffic.

How long should you plan for?

Chandraketugarh is perfect for a day trip. An early start allows enough time to explore the ruins and return by evening. However, if you wish to soak in the atmosphere, take long walks through the countryside and explore the history at a relaxed pace, an overnight stay can be considered.

Where to stay?

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply someone seeking quietude amid nature, Chandraketugarh offers a rare blend of both. For a meaningful break that doesn’t demand long travel hours, this offbeat destination is well worth experiencing at least once.
