What began as a craft drawer essential has now found its way into the dating playbook. “Divorce dust,” the colloquialism for body glitter or shimmer sprays, is the latest viral buzz making its way through social media. This sparkly stuff isn’t just skin-deep; it’s strategic.

Glitter that leaves a trail

The idea is simple. Glitter sticks. It transfers. And it clings for dear life, refusing to be easily washed away.

Women are applying body shimmer before a date or carrying glitter sprays in their cars and purses. The goal is subtle yet potent. If the man they’re meeting is already married or in a committed relationship, the glitter may just tag along for the ride. A stray spark of glitter on a shirt collar, jacket sleeve, or car seat can raise some interesting questions later on.

On social media, some women have dubbed it a “married man repellent.” The strategy described in posts is that a man with nothing to hide wouldn’t give a second thought to a little bit of shimmer, but a man hiding a relationship might suddenly become leery of lint rollers and laundry.

Why is it gaining traction?

Supporters have framed the trend as a light-hearted and cautious one. Instructions on how to apply glitter effectively are now also highlighting where it sticks best, from the sides of the collarbone to the wrists, shoulders, and even in hair.

However, the response is not all positive. Some people see this trend as a way to easily assess the honesty of a person before emotionally investing in them. Others believe that it is a reflection of dating fatigue, where people are more cautious than trusting. The very discussion about it is also pushing it further into mainstream discourse.

The science behind the sparkle

There is a very scientific reason why this trend has stuck. The particles of glitter tend to stick to skin, clothing fibres, and furniture, and even tend to remain after washing. This tendency to stick around has made it very difficult to ignore.

In a dating world where the definition of a relationship seems very hazy, this physical reminder has, for some, become a subtle reassurance.

Beyond glitter

For those who are looking for more subtle indicators, many also look at behavioural patterns. Sudden changes in availability, inconsistent stories, reluctance to be seen in public together, and very guarded phone behaviour are some of the common indicators of a potential problem. Many people also rely on their gut instincts when something doesn’t feel right.

Whether it is perceived as very clever or very questionable, “divorce dust” has certainly brought a very interesting sparkle to the conversation about dating.
