Just two days before the start of IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were forced into a late squad reshuffle after Harshit Rana was ruled out due to injury. The franchise roped in Navdeep Saini as his replacement, handing the out-of-favour pacer a fresh opportunity. However, this last-minute change also underlines deeper concerns surrounding KKR’s bowling combination ahead of the new season.

Golden opportunity for Navdeep Saini

Navdeep Saini’s return to the IPL comes as a much-needed lifeline. The Indian pacer had gone unsold in the IPL mini auction, even at his base price of ₹75 lakh. His inclusion now gives him a chance to re-establish himself on the big stage.

Saini has been part of the IPL since 2019, when he debuted for Royal Challengers Bangalore and picked up 11 wickets in 13 matches. He continued with RCB for two more seasons before moving to Rajasthan Royals, where he struggled for consistent opportunities. Overall, he has taken 23 wickets in the tournament, with his ability to bowl consistently above 140 kmph remaining his biggest strength.

Injuries derail KKR’s pace strategy

KKR’s preparations have taken a hit due to multiple injury concerns among their Indian pacers. Earlier, Saurav Dubey was named as a replacement for Akash Deep. While there was initial hope that Harshit Rana might recover midway through the tournament, his condition ruled him out completely. His appearance at the BCCI awards on crutches confirmed the seriousness of the injury, forcing KKR into a last-minute change.

Overseas uncertainty deepens bowling concerns

The problems don’t end with domestic injuries. KKR’s overseas pace options also remain uncertain. Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani, who replaced Mustafizur Rahman, is yet to make his IPL debut, making his adaptability a key question. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana is still awaiting his NOC, casting doubt over his availability.

With both domestic and overseas bowling options unsettled, KKR head into IPL 2026 with a fragile pace attack, hoping Saini’s inclusion can provide some stability.
