The Indian Premier League 2026 season is approaching, and discussions around MS Dhoni’s future continue to dominate headlines. The Chennai Super Kings icon, who has already scaled back his workload in recent years, is now being considered for a more restricted role under the Impact Player rule.

Detailed statements and context

The Impact Player rule allows teams to rotate players based on match situations, but it limits overall involvement. For a player like Dhoni, renowned for his leadership, wicketkeeping, and tactical awareness, such a role could significantly reduce his influence during matches. Speaking on his YouTube channel in March 2026, Aakash Chopra delivered a strong and detailed take on Dhoni’s situation.

He said, “If MS Dhoni is playing only as an Impact Player, then he should retire. Cricket is not football.”

Chopra elaborated that, unlike football, where managers or substituted players can still influence the game from outside, cricket requires constant on-field involvement to control the match.

He further explained, “MS Dhoni’s biggest strength is his game awareness, his reading of situations, and his ability to guide bowlers and fielders ball by ball. If he is not on the field for the entire duration, that impact automatically reduces. Chopra also pointed out that Dhoni’s presence behind the stumps is crucial, adding that, “You cannot replicate what Dhoni does as a wicketkeeper-captain with someone else while he comes in only to bat for a few overs.”

He concluded by suggesting that continuing in a diminished role might not align with Dhoni’s legacy, “A player of his stature should either play a full role or take a call. Playing half a role doesn’t suit someone like him.”

Uncertainty over IPL 2026 future

Despite the growing speculation, Dhoni has not officially confirmed whether IPL 2026 will be his final season. His role within Chennai Super Kings and his fitness levels remain key factors in the decision.

Chopra’s remarks have added fuel to an already intense debate. While fans continue to hope for one more full season from Dhoni, questions remain over whether the legendary cricketer will continue or choose to step away on his own terms.
