Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is set for a major transition after a consortium of Indian and global investors agreed to acquire the franchise in an all-cash deal valued at USD 1.78 billion (approximately Rs 16,660 crore). The agreement, confirmed by United Spirits Limited (USL), marks one of the most expensive franchise deals in cricket.

The buying group includes the Aditya Birla Group, Blackstone's perpetual private equity arm BXPE, Bolt Ventures led by David Blitzer, and the Times of India Group. The transaction is subject to approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Once cleared, the consortium will take formal control of RCB, with Aryaman Birla set to step in as chairman.

From cricketing roots to corporate leadership

Aryaman Birla, son of industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, began his journey in cricket before moving into business. At 17, he left Mumbai to pursue opportunities in Madhya Pradesh cricket. He also gained experience in England, playing with West Hampstead Cricket Club and the London Schools Cricket Association under former Middlesex cricketer Paul Weekes.

His domestic breakthrough came in 2017 with his Ranji Trophy debut. A year earlier, he had topped the run charts in the CK Nayudu Trophy, scoring 602 runs at an average of 75.25, including three centuries.

A brief but promising cricket career

Aryaman featured in nine first-class matches, including eight during the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy season. One of his notable performances was a maiden century against Bengal at Eden Gardens, helping Madhya Pradesh secure a draw. During this period, he shared the dressing room with players like Rajat Patidar and Venkatesh Iyer.

He was picked by Rajasthan Royals in 2018 but did not play a match across two seasons. In December 2019, at 22, he stepped away from cricket, citing severe anxiety related to the sport.

Return to cricket in a new role

After leaving the game, Aryaman transitioned into the corporate world. He now serves on the board of the Aditya Birla Management Corporation and holds directorship roles in companies such as Grasim Industries and Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail. His academic background includes an MBA (Honours) from Harvard Business School, a Master's in Global Finance from Bayes Business School, and a Commerce degree from the University of Mumbai.

"It is a privilege to come together in this partnership to shape the next phase of growth for RCB," he was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times. "Together, we will continue to Play Bold, on the pitch, in the community, and for the fans who make RCB what it is," he added.
