The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Cricket Canada’s membership and funding with immediate effect after identifying serious administrative and governance shortcomings within the organisation. The decision is a significant setback for Canadian cricket, which has made notable progress on the international stage in recent years.

As an Associate Member of the ICC, Cricket Canada depends heavily on financial support from the global governing body to run its operations, development programmes and national teams. The suspension of funding is expected to impact the organisation’s functioning, although cricket activities are likely to continue while corrective measures are implemented.

ICC acts over governance failures

The ICC’s action follows concerns regarding governance practices, financial management and overall administration within Cricket Canada. The governing body found that the organisation had failed to meet several standards expected of ICC members.

Last year, an audio recording involving Chohan emerged in the public domain, sparking fresh controversy within Canadian cricket.

In the conversation, Chohan claimed that certain Cricket Canada officials had tried to influence national team selections by backing specific players for inclusion in the squad. The recording also featured allegations related to potential match-fixing attempts, leading the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit to initiate an investigation into the matter.

The suspension comes amid a period of increased scrutiny around Canadian cricket administration. Reports and investigations in recent months have raised questions about transparency, board operations and compliance with governance requirements. These concerns ultimately prompted the ICC to take immediate action.

The move highlights the ICC’s commitment to ensuring that all member boards maintain strong governance structures and operate in accordance with established regulations.

Cricket Canada faces road to recovery

The decision arrives during a challenging period for Cricket Canada, which has experienced several leadership and administrative changes over the past year. Efforts have already been made to improve governance, including reforms aimed at strengthening oversight and accountability.

Cricket Canada recently held its annual general meeting and elected a new board, with officials expressing their intention to address the issues identified by the ICC. The administration has stated that it remains committed to restoring confidence in the organisation and meeting all compliance requirements.

For now, the suspension serves as a major warning for the board and a crucial moment for Canadian cricket. The organisation must now work closely with the ICC to resolve the identified shortcomings and regain its standing. How quickly those reforms are implemented could determine when Cricket Canada’s membership and funding are fully restored.
