After a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, serious questions are now being raised over Rishabh Pant’s future in India’s Test side and his leadership role within the national setup. Pant endured a difficult season both as a batter and as captain of Lucknow Super Giants, leading to growing concerns among selectors ahead of India’s upcoming assignments.
The Indian selection committee is expected to meet soon to finalise the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan on June 6, along with the following ODI series. According to reports, Pant’s role in the team could become one of the biggest discussion points during those meetings.
Leadership pressure is becoming a concern
A section of the team management reportedly believes that captaincy pressure is negatively affecting Pant’s natural attacking game. His decision-making as a leader has already faced criticism in recent months, including during India’s Test against South Africa in Guwahati.

Selectors are now believed to be considering whether reducing his leadership responsibilities could help him regain confidence and return to his best as a batter. There is a growing opinion that Pant performs more freely when he is not burdened with additional responsibilities on the field.
Test value remains intact despite poor form
Despite the criticism, Pant continues to be regarded as one of India’s most impactful Test cricketers. His aggressive batting and match-winning ability in difficult situations still make him a valuable asset in red-ball cricket.

A BCCI source reportedly stated that India cannot afford to lose a player capable of changing matches single-handedly. However, concerns remain over his recent consistency and shot selection under pressure.
Meanwhile, competition for places in the ODI squad has intensified. KL Rahul is currently the preferred wicketkeeper, while Dhruv Jurel, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are also in contention. Pant’s underwhelming IPL season has now placed his limited-overs future under fresh uncertainty.
