India’s squad selection for the upcoming Afghanistan series is expected to trigger major discussions, with several senior cricketers under the scanner ahead of the June assignments. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is scheduled to meet in Guwahati on Tuesday to finalise squads for the one-off Test and three-match ODI series.

According to reports, Virat Kohli is almost certain to feature in the ODI series after delivering an impressive campaign in IPL 2026. His strong form has reportedly convinced selectors about his readiness for the 50-over format.

Virat set for return, doubts remain over Rohit and Bumrah

However, there are still concerns regarding Rohit Sharma’s fitness. The Indian captain suffered injuries during the Mumbai Indians’ clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12 and has since dealt with both toe and hamstring issues. Rohit has appeared in only seven matches this IPL season and has largely been used as an impact player, reducing his time on the field. Selectors are reportedly assessing whether he can handle the physical demands of a full ODI game.

Jasprit Bumrah may also be rested for the Afghanistan series. With the pacer having battled multiple injuries in recent years and an important England tour approaching, the board is believed to be unwilling to take unnecessary risks.

Pant under pressure, new faces in contention

Rishabh Pant’s place in the setup is also under scrutiny after an underwhelming IPL season. Reports suggest Sanju Samson could be considered as the backup wicketkeeper in the ODI squad, while KL Rahul remains the first-choice option.

In the Test squad discussions, Devdutt Padikkal is reportedly being considered for the number three role, with selectors not fully convinced by Sai Sudharsan’s recent performances.

Young pacer Auqib Nabi from Jammu & Kashmir could earn a maiden Test call-up following an impressive Ranji Trophy campaign. Mohammed Shami is also in contention for a comeback, while Prince Yadav may receive an ODI opportunity after strong displays in domestic cricket and the IPL.

India will begin the Afghanistan series with the lone Test in Mullanpur on June 6, followed by ODIs in Dharamshala, Lucknow and Chennai from June 14 to 20.
